HUBER+SUHNER gas discharge tube (GDT) protectors are normally delivered without gas tube (series 3401 and 3402). This allows the customer to select the appropriate GDT according to his application conditions, especially the maximum operation signal amplitude.

Important

All EMP protectors of the following series are supplied with properly installed GDT.

EMP protectors with replaceable GDT

  • series 3403 - Fine protectors, box style
  • series 3409 - High-power/low-IM GDT protectors
  • series 3410 - High-power/low-IM GDT protectors with integrated high-pass filter and bias-T

The suitable replacement GDT is shown on the data sheet of the protector.

EMP protectors with fix installed GDT (no replacement possible)

  • series 3403 – Fine protectors, barrel style
  • series 3404 – Miniature GDT protectors
  • series 3406 – Slim Line GDT protectors
  • series 3411 – Coarse coaxial data line protectors
  • series 3412 – Hybrid and Fine coaxial data line protectors

Definitions

UZstat

Static spark-over voltage – voltage which ignites the GDT in the case of a voltage rise of less than 100 V/ms.

UZdyn

Dynamic spark-over voltage – voltage which ignites the GDT in the case of a voltage rise of 1 kV/ µs.

IS

Impulse discharge current – peak value of a defined current pulse which is allowed to be applied at least ten times at intervals of 30 seconds without causing any significant changes of the spark-over voltage specification. Values are given for current pulse shape definitions of 8/20 µs (rise time/half-value period).

ISG

Maximum pulse current – peak value of a defined single current pulse which can be conducted to ground without mechanical destruction or restriction of the protection function. For pulse shape refer to IS.

UARC

Arc voltage – increasing current drives the GDT into the arc state. The resulting voltage across the GDT is the arc voltage.

Concerning the selection of a suitable GDT, refer to section «Selection of gas discharge tubes».
